Field Studies

What drives the values: a point, a curve, an image, random values, blends and steps

Twelve studies in a four by three grid: rows of single fields (point, curve, image, random), blends of the point and curve fields (average, minimum, maximum, multiply), and the single fields stepped

Overview

The Remap section turns a grid into values, and every component that takes values takes them the same way. Twelve studies, one definition, each insetting one Hex Grid, size 10, with Offset by Values, so the field is the only thing that changes. Value Remap stretches every field across the same insets: 4 in where it is lowest to 0.75 in where it is highest.

The first row is four single fields: one point and one curve, placed as in the Modifier studies; a picture of ripples; and random values, seed 0. The second blends the point and curve fields four ways, and the third steps the first row’s insets to whole inches. Slivers where the region trims a cell are too small to inset and stay empty.

Fields

Each field measured or read at every cell, then remapped across the insets: small openings where it is low, large ones where it is high.

Blends

The point field and the curve field combined cell by cell by Blend Values: their average, the smaller, the larger and their product. Each blend is remapped across the same insets.

Steps

The insets of the first row rounded to the nearest whole inch by Step Values: four sizes, from 1 to 4 in, in place of a continuous field.
